The Sheriff of Phoenix
What a neonate has been told about Roland Cross — October 1994. Spoiler-light, in-character orientation.

In brief: The Prince’s open hand is Roland Cross. He arrived in 1989 with a long Southwest resume. His presence means order — or Final Death. Never miss; never waste a bullet.
Roland Cross
Court talk paints him as a tall, lean gunslinger — weather-worn late thirties, piercing blue eyes, duster and wide-brimmed hat, sandalwood-handled revolvers on the hip as statement and warning. He moves with fluid economy. Neonates who watch him at Hawthorne remember the stillness: not swagger, aim.
- Title: Sheriff of Phoenix
- Clan: Toreador
- Arrived: 1989 (Prince Solomon’s hire)
- Floor: Hawthorne Estate Elysium / the streets after
What You Were Taught
- In 1989, Prince Solomon Reaves brought Roland in as Sheriff — a signal that the Prince meant to keep a tight grip on the domain.
- Reputation: precision, patience, and a century-plus of enforcing Camarilla law across the Southwest. Legendary for never missing and never wasting a shot.
- At Elysium he watches; after Elysium he hunts. Disputes that leave the salon may end in his escort, not the Harpy’s ledger alone.
- He is not “dumb muscle.” Decent Sheriffs are investigators and diplomats with fangs — and Roland’s legend is the clean kill versus the messy one.
Who he is hunting tonight, which deputies he trusts, and what the Prince has already ordered are not neonate knowledge. If he summons you, go.
How His Court Works (Public Face)
What you can safely assume before you take the floor:
- Lawful summons from the Sheriff are not optional gossip — refusal is written into Status as a loss.
- His theater is the hunt and the cell; the Harpy’s is the ballroom. Both punish. Different rooms.
- Elysium remains Tradition. He does not get a free pass to brawl in the gallery; the Keeper’s floor still matters.
- Unauthorized childer and “who is not Acknowledged” often belong to the Scourge’s brief first — lines blur when panic hits.
The Office
The Sheriff is the Prince’s open hand: the Kindred who drags the accused to judgment, enforces the Prince’s will in the streets, and reminds everyone that the Camarilla is not only etiquette — it is force. The office arrests and escorts subjects before the Prince or designated officers, pursues Masquerade threats that require hunting — Sabbat, hunters, reckless neonates, Kindred who refuse summons — and stands as a visible deterrent so the domain knows the Prince can reach them. The Sheriff works beside (and sometimes at odds with) the Scourge, Harpy, and Keeper of Elysium, each of whom enforces a different kind of order. Roland Cross holds that office in Phoenix. When the Prince calls for order, he is who answers.
